Abstract: | In this research, the process to develop a system design to improve the user experience of immersion coffee brewing is laid out. Initially, the brew process and how the brew performance is affected under different conditions were investigated. Afterwards the optimal brewing settings per existing immersion brewers was determined and their characteristics and challenges in the usability relating to it, defined. The derived conclusions were then used to form a basis for conceptual designs. Factors such as cleanability, single-serve/portion package and customization of the output by changing the recipe, were taken in consideration. The resulting system designs were ranked and the selected concept was further developed into a functional prototype, in order to prove its principle. The final design removes the necessity of the manual preparation a user needs to do before making an immersion brew, providing consistent high-quality coffee, meeting the requirements of optimal brewing quality and providing more user convenience at the touch of a button. |
