Designing a Virtual Reality headset for amblyopic children

Elderhorst, Tim R. (2021)

A VR device was designed for Vedea Healthware BV, which will be used to perform dichoptic training on children aged 4-7. Dichoptic training is a novel treatment for amblyopia. In order to be suitable for children, a VR device needs to be small and lightweight, with a smaller mask fit than regular VR devices. The ILD (inter-lens distance) should match the ICD (inter-camera distance) of the content, as well as the IOD (interocular distance) of the user. Failure to set the ILD equal to the ICD and IOD will result in optical distortion in the form of double vision or warp distortion. This is hypothesized to decrease the effectivity of the dichoptic training. Children with refractive errors should wear prescription glasses inside the VR device, and strabismic users should use a corrective prism included in the product.
