Abstract: | The use of thermoplastic composites in the automotive industry is desirable due to their low density, excellent material properties and recyclability. Since safety is an important aspect, understanding and predicting the material behavior under impact loading is required. To create a predictive model, experimental data gathering is performed in this work. A combination of low velocity drop weight impact tests and high strain rate quasi static three point bending tests is used to determine the influence of strain rate on the material properties and failure behavior of a thermoplastic composite. Unidirectional specimens are tested at 0 and 90 degree angles with respect to the fibers. It was found that 90 degree specimens failed via matrix cracking. 0 Degree specimens failed via a complex combination of matrix cracking, fiber fracturing and delamination. An increase in strain rate during testing led to an increase in flexural strength, strain at failure and specific energy absorption capability. The flexural modulus proved independent of the strain rate. The possibility of using the time-temperature-superposition principle for higher strain rate testing was investigated and found possible for 0 degree specimens, but impossible for 90 degree specimens due to their increased brittleness at low temperatures. |
