Abstract:The healthcare sector is in need for changes since demand and costs are in an upward trend because of for example the ageing population. Transition of care from hospital to home might contribute to this change. In the Isala hospital Zwolle at the orthopedic department, they are already providing intravenous antibiotics at home, but never evaluated this process. This study aims to provide insight into the important aspects and the experiences of healthcare professionals and patients with the treatment of intravenous antibiotics at home for patients with a prosthetic joint infection. To gather this insight, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 9 patients and 8 healthcare professionals that are part of the treatment process. Themes used during the interviews were communication, information, efficiency, patient-centeredness and safety. The results of this study show that the current process of treating patients with prosthetic joint infections at home with intravenous antibiotics is positively experienced. Important aspects, where there is room for improvement are information and efficiency. The hospital is advised to review the content of information and their way of providing information to the patients and other professionals since patients and professionals have indicated that the information provided in the current situation is insufficient.
