Abstract:Businesses struggle to identify suitable processes for the implementation of Robotic Process Automation. Issues like complexity, time-consumption and lack of a systematic approach with current process selection methods cause organizations to select non-suitable processes. This leads to overly long and expensive RPA projects. This study assesses the contribution of a workshop, using the wisdom of the crowd, as a method for identifying RPA suitable processes. The workshop included theory on RPA, its primary functions and process criteria. Its framework was based on both the Business Process Management Lifecycle and nominal brainstorming. An experiment with the workshop was conducted at the Technology & Risk department of Ernst & Young. Interviews with RPA experts showed that the participants were capable of identifying a process as a quick win for RPA adoption. In addition, survey results showed that participants perceived the workshop as easy to understand and to apply. In conclusion, this workshop can be used by businesses, both experienced and non-experienced with RPA, for identifying suitable RPA processes. While further improvement is needed to optimize the contribution of the workshop, this study argues that a workshop can be helpful for businesses struggling to identify RPA processes.
