Abstract: | This study aims to describe the perspectives of patients on living with the long-term consequences of aneurysmal subarachnoid haemorrhage (aSAH) and to explore the relations between the perspectives of patients and their health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and functional outcomes. Insight into the perspectives of patients on living with the long-term consequences of aSAH was obtained by means of semi structured interviews. The extended Glasgow Outcome Scale (GOSE) and the Quality of Life after Brain Injury (QOLIBRI) were used to explore the relations between the perspectives of patients and their HRQoL and functional outcomes. Overall, this study reveals that patients affected by aSAH are grateful to be alive. The results also indicate that the long-term consequences of aSAH have a major impact on patients and that the consequences and their impact differ partly per patient group. Thus, patients with poor functional outcomes and a low HRQoL have somewhat other perspectives on living with the long-term consequences of aSAH than patients with good functional outcomes and a high HRQoL. Patients have, irrespective of their functional outcomes and HRQoL, a desire to minimize dependency or maintain independency for everyday activities. Sensitivity to external stimuli has impact on patients with good functional outcomes and a high HRQoL. Patients with poor functional outcomes and a low HRQoL suffer from memory problems and fear of recurrence. |
