Abstract: | Software developers commonly provide video tutorials for their users on their websites. This study investigated the effectiveness of three practice schedules coupled with instructional videos in software training. For the purposes of the experiments, the instructional videos teaching advanced Word-processing skills were followed by a blocked, interleaved or cumulative practice schedule. The effects of the practice schedules on self-efficacy, engagement, learning, and preference of a practice schedule were compared. Forty-nine university students participated in the experiments. In other domains, contextual interference effect is believed to have caused a difference in influence of practice schedules at least on performance during training and knowledge retention. However, in the current study, no effects of conditions were found on self-efficacy, procedural or conceptual knowledge gain, task performance during training, and on preference of a practice schedule. The theoretical implication of this study is that contextual interference effect in video-based software training should be considered from the perspective of an improved software usability, humancomputer interaction, and the video-based nature of instructions. For practitioners, the takeaway is that they can continue using blocked practice as a preferred method of practice in delivering videobased software training. |
