Abstract:This study focused on the design, development, and usability of a virtual reality (VR) nature experience to improve subjective vitality of university students. The created virtual environment (VE) consisted out of four parts: nature environment, breathing tree task, butterfly exercise, and a yoga task. To participate in the study, 32 university students were recruited using availability sampling. Participants filled in self-report questionnaires before starting the research, before and after using VR. A laboratory-based stressor has been done before using the VE to create some psychological tension. Results from the questionnaires regarding usability showed that participants of this study were able to experience immersion, reported feeling present within the VE, and would recommend the VE to others. It was also found that subjective vitality has improved after using the VE in comparison to the before condition. Further research to support the validity of the study is necessary since the pilot test did not have a control group to account for certain factors (e.g. time). Additionally, minor adjustments to the overall VE still need to be made, such as improving usability and altering the exercises to be more interactive, as this would make the environment even more efficient for future use.
