Abstract: | This thesis examines the effect of board size, board independence, board gender diversity, and members with a medical background on financial performance in Dutch general hospitals. Dutch general hospitals are selected for the analysis because no prior research has been done examining these board characteristics. The Netherlands has a unique healthcare where most of the hospitals are non-profit organizations. To test the impact of board characteristics on financial performance, unbalanced panel data of 70 hospital organizations in 2015 to 2019 are included, which makes in total 322 observations. Using the ordinary least square (OLS) regression, results indicate that size, gender diversity, independence, and medical background have no impact on financial performance. However, there is evidence found in the robustness test that larger boards lead to lower financial performance and high board independence impacts the financial performance negatively. These findings indicate possible endogeneity problems and outliers. |
