Abstract:It is difficult for healthcare professionals to assess if a patient actually understands what is explained during his visit to the clinic. Tools for assessing (digital) health literacy in routine early assessment in the hospital have not yet been implemented. It is challenging for nurses and physicians to have a conversation with patients tailored to patients' health literacy level. As a patient may not understand the importance of medication adherence or the severity of his medical condition, and therefore does not understand and follow the given advice, this increases risk for negative effects on the patient's health. An easy to use tool to assess health literacy allows healthcare professionals to tailor their healthcare service to the patient’s health literacy level. Nurses should use this tool, as they usually spend more time with patients and may be more approachable for patients than physicians. In this systematic scoping review available tools for measuring (digital) health literacy tailored for use by nurses are assessed, including their potential use in routine early assessment in the hospital. The review was performed following the PRISMA guidelines and quality/usefulness of the literature was assessed. Four nurses from different hospital departments were interviewed to assess which aspects a tool to assess health literacy should have to be suitable for routine early assessment in the hospital to assess patients' (digital) health literacy. The result presents 37 assessment tools with different characteristics and assessed content, of which two tools seem most promising.
