Abstract:This study aims to quantify bowel loop motion and body composition during radiotherapy for gynecological cancer patients. This might improve the quality of life by diminishing the occurrence of bowel toxicity and malnutrition. 1) 3D cine-MRI scans were acquired. Subsequent images of the 3D cine-MRI scans were deformably registered to each other. From the resulting vector lengths parameters to express bowel loop motion were derived and differences over time were analyzed. The bowel loop motion seems to decrease during external beam radiotherapy, which was even more pronounced at the time of brachytherapy after fasting, general anesthesia, and inserted applicator. 2) To get more insight into the exact bowel loop motions by following the bowel centerlines over time, we used deep stochastic tracking to track the bowel centerlines automatically. The algorithm shows promising results, but improvements are required. Further research is required to allow for sparing of bowel loops with low motion. 3) To analyze body composition changes, at different time points CT scans were acquired. Muscle and fat tissues were semiautomatically segmented in an axial section at L3 level. During the radiotherapy period, muscle mass seems to decrease, while fat mass increases.
