Abstract:In this article we compare the computational efficiency and accuracy of the Fast Algorithm for Maxwell's Equations and the MIT Photonic Bands package. We apply the packages to three unique crystals at different simulation resolutions and compare the results to high-resolution reference data. In general FAME achieves lower computation times per wave-vector than MPB, although the relative difference decreases with higher resolutions. FAME exhibits higher error for two out of three crystals regardless of resolution, and for one crystal FAME exhibits an MSE that is several orders of magnitude higher than that of MPB. From these results, FAME could be a situational replacement for MPB, but does not have a clear advantage in the general case.
