Abstract:COVID-19 has left many people with long-COVID complaints although limited knowledge is available. The relationship between physical and mental fatigue, and sleep quality and daily activities as risk factors were explored over time. Method. The Experience Sampling Method (ESM) was used to collect self-reports seven times a day concerning fatigue levels, activities, and sleep from ten Dutch ex-hospitalized people with long-COVID for 14 consecutive days. Linear Mixed Modelling (LMM) were applied to analyse the longitudinal relationship between fatigue, their between-person and within-person effects, sleep, and daily activities. Results. Strong associations were found between physical and mental fatigue over time, significant at both the between-person and within-person level. Sleeping more hours at night predicted less physical and mental fatigue the following day. Performing household chores predicted less physical and mental fatigue two hours later whereas eating/drinking was found predictive of increased physical fatigue. Conclusion. Fatigue was found a severe and common symptom in long-COVID. Fewer hours of sleep at night seemed to increase mental fatigue the following day which was not researched nor confirmed in other lung diseases before. Certain daily activities were associated with increased fatigue at the time they were performed but not two hours later.
