Abstract:The psychological effects of solitary confinement on prisoners are harmful. Though extensive research on the effects of solitary confinement has been conducted, no qualitative research is available on how prisoners maintain their wellbeing while being in solitary confinement. The aim of this thesis was to investigate how prisoners manage to maintain their wellbeing under the dehumanizing circumstances of solitary confinement. In addition, this thesis aims to humanize prisoners by shedding a light on their experiences with solitary confinement.
