Abstract:More and more women start as entrepreneurs. However, women-led start-ups received only 3.5% of the funding in the Netherlands in 2020, while female entrepreneurs contribute to the world in different ways. But do they maybe have a better chance of a successful funding process with a specific background? That is what this research aims to answer. An inductive qualitative study was conducted on some specific aspects of a female entrepreneur's background. The sample of female entrepreneurs was found via the Crunchbase database after entering several filters. After the literature revealed three main influences from a person's background, namely entrepreneurial, family, and educational background, seventeen respondents completed a questionnaire on these topics. Interesting insights emerged from the study. In the Netherlands, work experience has more influence than your educational experience, which opposites the situation in the US. Your family background influences your perseverance and confidence but does not guarantee a successful funding process. The research revealed several other aspects that positively influence the funding process; seeking financing a second time, with a team and while in a popular industry, is almost always more successful. Advice for female entrepreneurs, investors and future research are all included in the conclusion of the study.
