Abstract:Introduction: Mental health conditions are often treated with pharmacotherapies and traditional psychoeducation. Since treatment resistance in patients is frequent, the need to research an improved or alternative treatment option is crucial. The rising interest in Psilocybin-Assisted Therapy resulted in the current early stages of clinical testing of psilocybin. Psilocybin-assisted therapy for patients with mental health conditions is intriguing, since past research stated there are decreases in mental health symptoms and no severe adverse effects. The general aim of this review was to examine the effectiveness of psilocybin in treating patients suffering from mental health related conditions. Method: A broad array of search terms regarding PAT was used to search the databases Web of Science, Scopus and PubMed, which generated 1.289 results. After deleting double results, and scanning the titles and abstracts for relevance, 1.273 results were deleted, which resulted in a final selection of 16 articles. This review included seven randomized control trials, five open label studies, two follow-up studies, and two case studies. Results: Motivational Enhancement Therapy and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy was used as a therapeutic framework during studies to target the therapeutic effects of psilocybin. However, preparation, support, and integration (PSI) was the most used model between the studies. The results of this review showed that symptoms of (cancer related) depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and substance use disorder were significantly decreased with psilocybin-assisted therapy. No serious adverse effects were reported, and the use of psilocybin-assisted therapy seemed to be relatively safe and effective. Conclusion: Psilocybin-assisted therapy has the potential to be a successful and effective intervention in treating mental health conditions. Psilocybin has proven to interrupt the dysfunctional psychopathological processes in patients. Bigger sized randomized control trials and longitudinal studies should be considered for future research.
