Abstract:Remote health monitoring (RHM) presents a solution within smart healthcare, that can assist in overcoming challenges that are faced by healthcare systems, while also enabling independency and improving quality of life for elderly or chronically ill people. Despite the availability of the technologies and the clear benefits, remote health monitoring services are still not widely adopted. The majority of research in this field has focused on technical aspects, while user-centered approaches that provide an understanding of the acceptability of RHM systems are sparse. This research aimed at gaining insights into user perceptions in relation to acceptance of RHM systems. It was conducted as a qualitative research via semi-structured interviews with German older adults as a target group. Based on the results a conceptual model was developed to illustrate the identified values shaping perceptions of RHM and possible relations with user characteristics. Context-specific aspects like privacy, trust, human touch norms and health beliefs, which are not included in traditional acceptance models, appeared to be most important in affecting perceptions of RHM. This study has highlighted the distinctive features of user perceptions concerning acceptance of IoT-based and health-focused technologies and contributes to the required extension of existing knowledge.
