Abstract: | The evaluation of verbal creativity research is mostly based on human ratings. However, relying on human ratings for creativity includes downsides like varying perceptions and preferences of individuals. Quantitative measures of creativity pose a promising alternative. In the current study, creative word associations produced in a Word Association Task in a study conducted by Rataj et al. (2018) were assessed through human ratings based on the components of novelty and understandability, which are thought to represent creativity. Novelty was assessed by asking participants how novel a word association was, and understandability was assessed by asking participants how understandable a word association was. The results showed that the semantic similarity vectors based on Latent Semantic Analysis equally correlated with novelty and understandability ratings. The prediction-based semantic similarity measures (i.e., based on Continuous Bag of Words and the open-source library spaCy) correlated more strongly with novelty than with understandability. Further, the semantic similarity vectors based on Latent Semantic Analysis, Continuous Bag of Words, and the open-source library spaCy were found to predict novelty and understandability of the word associations. These findings support the current notion in the field of creativity that suggests that quantitative measures can predict human judgement of creativity. |
