Abstract:Background. ERAS, enhanced recovery after surgery is a new method which had been introduced in Medisch Spectrum Twente (MST) since March 2020. The aim of this program is to maximize a patients’ physical fitness before and after surgery, to enhance the recovery after surgery. Studies have shown the effectiveness and benefits of the ERAS program, like shortening of hospital stays and less complications. However, up till now, specific in MST, no research into the experience of the patients with this method had been done. Aims and objectives. The primarily goal was to get insight in the patients’ experiences with ERAS after an elective colorectal surgery in the pre- and postoperative phase in hospital. The second goal of the study was to find out, if there were questions on which the opinions were divided, whether these can be traced back to a specific patient- or disease characteristic. Design. The design of the study is a quantitative, prospective, cross-sectional study. Methods. A survey with a total of 50 questions was sent to patients who did undergo an elective colorectal surgery in the period between March 2020 and May 2022. The survey had been made and sent with the program Castor. The questions were focused on different aspects in the pre- and postoperative period in the care pathway of the colorectal surgery. The results of the survey were linked to the personal- and disease characteristics of each patient and were analyzed with the statistical program SPSS. Results. 291 patients were assessed for eligibility in the study, a total of 57 (19.6%) patients did respond to the survey. The experience of the respondents to the total pre-operative phase was 70% (N=40) positive, 18% (N=10) neutral and 12% (N=7) negative. The experience of the respondents to the total post-operative phase was 71% (N=41) positive, 19% (N=11) neutral and 10% (N=5) negative. As a total result, 71% (N=41) of the patients had a positive experience with the ERAS program, 18% (N=10) had a neutral experience and 11% (N=6) had a negative experience with ERAS. Conclusions. Based on the survey, patients had a positive experience with the ERAS program. A few points of improvement are emerged that can be taken into account to further optimize the use of the program.
