Abstract:In this thesis we take a look at device mediated virtual touch. Barely any research has been done into mediated social touch in which no physical representation of the other party is present. In this thesis we try to implement this. We aim to answer the question if we can improve social presence by including haptics in a virtual handshake. Before we answer the main question, we present several chapters which explore design choices so we can build a proof-driven experiment. In the end, no significance is found in the final experiment, however, we do find visible trends. Based on this information, future studies can either improve upon this experiment, or take the results from early chapters to build their own design.
