Abstract: | Fridays for Future (FFF) and Extinction Rebellion (XR) have recently emerged as a new generation of climate justice movementsthat draws attention to the unequal distribution of climate change impacts. Both movements mobilize large numbers of participants, however, FFF has turned out to be more successful in mobilizing participation than XR, especially in Germany. This thesis examines the research question “How can differences in the mobilization success of FFF and XR be explained by the framing strategies of both movements?”. In a qualitative content analysis of frames based on primary data sources from both movements the concepts of core framing tasks and frame alignment are explored as explanatory factors for movement mobilization. As expected, FFF and XR differ regarding their proposed solutions and rationale for engagement. However, FFF’s solutions are more radical than initially assumed. Both movements engage in transformative framing against the theoretical expectation that differences in the mobilization success of both movements can partly be explained by FFF’s engagement in cautious framing which resonates with a wider audience. Based on these findings, the core framing tasks are confirmed as an explanatory factor for movement mobilization whereas the explanatory potential of frame alignment cannot be verified. |
