Abstract:Background. Creative Art Therapies (CATs) are effective in treating personality disorders (PDs), but especially one criterium, namely attachment problems. This study examined the development of state attachment safety, anxiety and avoidance during a three-phases treatment with one phase focusing on CATs within individuals suffering from complex PDs in an inpatient psychotherapy setting. Method. 11 participants with PDs filled out the State Adult Attachment Measure on a weekly basis. A multiple baseline single case experimental design (SCED) was used to examine the effects within every individual. and Friedmans test was conducted. Results. Visual analyses showed high variability, high anxiety and avoidance scores, crisis admissions showed low scores on state attachment safety and high scores on anxiety shortly before becoming suicidal. Effects were not stable during the post-measurement. Differences between phases could not be confirmed by statistical analyses. Discussion. People low on safety and high on anxiety seem to be vulnerable for becoming suicidal. In practice, treatment should be tailored to individual needs and safe attachment should be enhanced. This research greatly contributes to the research area of SCED studies and CATs. Future research should examine factors contributing to a safe attachment and investigate the relationship between state attachment and CATs statistically.
