| Abstract: | After hip fracture surgery, rehabilitation is carried out with the aim of functional recovery, so that individuals after hip fracture surgery can return to their living situation as quickly as possible. However, rehabilitating the elderly after hip fracture surgery can be a slow and arduous process. Hospital group Twente Almelo and the University of Twente are conducting research into the rehabilitation process of elderly who have undergone hip fracture surgery to gain more insight into the rehabilitation process. Heart rate can provide an indication of health and therefore also of functional recovery after surgery. Examining heart rate response to body movement can give insight into the rehabilitation process. This paper examines the following research question: ‘What is the relationship between heart rate and body movement of elderly after hip fracture surgery?’. To answer this research question, the heart rate recovery (HRR) after cessation of activity in the elderly after hip fracture surgery was examined. HRR is the decrease in heart rate in the first minute post physical activity and is slower for an unfit individual in comparison with a fit individual. The obtained values for the HRR were evaluated. The results suggest a positive relationship between the HRR after a moderate movement intensity activity such as cycling and the days during rehabilitation after surgery. However, more research should be done on the relationship between heart rate and body movement to establish a significant relationship. |
