Abstract:While researchers suggest strong associations between self-compassion and mental health, self-compassion develops differently in females and males. Therefore, the study first aims to explore to what extent a person’s self-compassion level and social media use are associated on the state-level is perceived by females and males. A structured and repeated-measurement sampling study was conducted amongst young adults (n = 23), utilizing, the Self-Compassion Scale Short-Form (SCS-SF), and two self-developed questionnaire assessing time spent and the number of social media and self-compassion. Fluctuations in social media consumption and self-compassion between individuals were indicated on the state-level. Furthermore, a significant positive correlation between trait-self-compassion and state self-compassion, as well as for trait and state-level of social media consumption, was found. A non-significant correlation was demonstrated between social media use and self-compassion on the trait-level. The Linear Mixed Model Analysis indicated a non-significant correlation between social media use and self-compassion and thus merely a sub-tle difference in females and males could be found in this relation, demonstrating a positive correlation for females and a negative one for males. Researchers and practitioners should take the relation between social media use and self-compassion into account in future studies and interventions focused on self-compassion, while in addition investigating the difference between females and males in a deeper way to find the causes behind it.
