Abstract:Obesity and overweight is a growing problem in current society. At least 39% of adults is dealing with overweight with another 13% being obesity patients. By monitoring the daily food intake and exercising regularly, overweight is easily preventable. Many different diets use so called food diaries; notepads in which the daily food intake is monitored. However, these notes often turnout incorrect. The amount of food intake is filled in wrong or meals and snacks are forgotten entirely. With the use of Automatic Dietary Monitoring (ADM) food intake might be measured more precise in the future. ADM uses a lot of different sensors to be able to do this. In this research the Hexoskin lung volume sensor was used. Swallows during food intake were detected while participants wore a Hexoskin Smart Shirt. The difference between a normal swallow and a swallow after food intake were compared. Next to that, this research investigated the influence of swallowing food with different structure. The research questions for this research are: ‘To what extent can swallows during eating events be detected with the use of the Hexoskin lung volume sensor?’ and ‘How well can food with different structures be distinguished from each other? This research showed that with the use of the Hexoskin lung volume sensor swallows after an eating event can be distinguished from normal breathing patterns. To differentiate food with dissimilar structures more research is required. At the moment there seems to be no reliable and universal association.
