Abstract:Over the last few years, the number of patients at the Emergency Departments (ED) in Dutch hospitals and complexity of care for these patients increased, resulting in a rising pressure on the acute care system. Pressure on the ED may be relieved by transferring patients in need of observation before a decision is made to hospitalize them or not, to an Acute Admission Ward (AAW). However, it is not known what the number of patient admissions to the AAW are, what the variations throughout the years are, whether SARS-CoV-2 influenced the number of patient admissions and what diagnoses are made. Furthermore, the flow of patients admissions to the AAW throughout the hospital is unknown. Thus, where patients are referred from when admitted to the hospital, the number of patients transferred to hospital wards after their AAW stay, their length of stay at the AAW and in the hospital, and where patients are transferred to after their hospital stay. The aim of this study is to examine the patient flow over time and characteristics of the patient population that is admitted to the AAW at Rijnstate hospital. This is done through univariate- and multivariate descriptive analyses of patient data, extracted from Electronic Health Records, in the statistical computing program R.
