Abstract: | A research has been done to develop an experiment on a PlexiLoC, part of the NLT lab on a chip course for high school students. With this PlexiLoC high school students can design and build their own microfluidic chip. Effort had been done to develop a setting where the refractive index of a fluid is measured inside a homemade microfluidic chip. Using a CCD camera and a home build LabView program images are captured and analysed. By replacing the fluid to one with a different refractive index a light beam is deflected sideways in a parallel direction. From tests it is concluded that an image can be processed and compared to a reference testfluid. Results show a clear measurable shift between images when the fluid layer is 10 mm thick. In case of a microfluidic chip with a channel of 500 micrometer and a change of refractive index from 1.333 to 1.424, the shift is in the order of a single pixel of the used camera and thus below the measuring threshold for this setup. A mechanical setup has been designed and build as a demonstration add-on for the PlexiLoC so camera (pinhole type) and light source can be easily managed. Some suggestions have been made to further investigate enhancements for this type of measurements using a PlexiLoC. |
