Abstract:An explorative case study has been conducted with students of a Dutch HAVO level 4 class to find out their mindset – as defined by Dweck (2006). Students who choose parts of their curriculum, tend to choose physics as their subject but fail to do the work that is helpful to get good results. This difference in choice and behaviour may be driven by the perceptions that such a student has about physics – growth or fixed mindset. This research tried to identify whether it is possible to quickly discern the mindset of students in a classroom, using a specifically designed physics experiment. Three methods were used: the teachers assessment in advance based on Dweck’s descriptions, a Dutch survey to measure executive functioning of adolescents and video analysis of students key behaviours during the experiment. The qualitative results shows that students who show key behaviors that points strongly towards either mindset agrees mostly to the teachers assessment before the experiment. Students that show less behaviors that point towards either mindset shows less agreeing results with the teachers assessment of that student. The qualitive results of measuring executive functioning seems not to supports any of the other results conclusively. Conclusion can be that these tools do not help to identify students mindset, unless it is more explicitly growth or fixed mindset. This means that these methods are not very discerning and therefore of less use in class.
