Abstract:This report studies a unique (re-)scheduling problem of jobs in a production plant of one of the most famous ice cream producers in the world, Ben & Jerry’s. Given rapidly growing competition, wider product varieties, complex plant structure, changing production plans, efficient methods for initial scheduling and re-scheduling are required by any production plan. In this problem, the current (re-) scheduling process, which can be best described as a constructive heuristic based on the Earliest Due Date (EDD) rule, is described. The goal of this study is, by means of practical and theoretical research, to create methods to improve the schedules in terms of total changeover time.
