Abstract: | This study investigated the correlation between Dental Anxiety and Dental Avoidance and the moderating role of general Self-Efficacy in this relationship. As Dental Anxiety often results in the avoidance of dentist consultation, this study aimed to investigate underlying factors and contribute to possible preventative measures to protect individuals from entering the vicious circle of dental fear. An online questionnaire containing Corah's Dental Anxiety Scale (CDAS), the General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSE) and two items regarding Dental Avoidance was provided to students of the University of Twente within the age of twenty and twenty-nine (n = 81). As expected, Pearson’s correlation coefficient indicated a moderate positive correlation between Dental Anxiety and Dental Avoidance, r = .59, p < .001. However, Self-Efficacy was not found to be a moderator in this relationship. For future research, the use of a situation specific measurement instrument for Self-Efficacy is recommended. |
