Abstract:This study aims to provide insight into the usability of a software tool that provides audio stories to young students to enhance their vocabulary skills without needing parental assistance. The software included audio stories and a word game modelled on the Peabody PPVT-III-NL test. Two versions of the app were created: passive and interactive. In the passive one, the story was presented in a linear order. In the interactive version, children were asked how the story should progress at different points. The aim was to increase a more engaging listing experience. Five Dutch children between the ages of 4 and 5 and a half were recruited, and the software was tested with them and their parents in the room. Results indicated that the children could navigate the software, but the instructions were insufficient for independent use. Additionally, issues were found with the length of the stories and the clarity of the pictorial representations of buttons. This is problematic as the target group could not read yet. The word game was well received, but minor issues were found with some images and the need for more randomization in the post-test. In conclusion, by improving the instructions and buttons and reducing the length of the stories, children should be able to use software to enhance their vocabulary skills without needing parental assistance.
