Abstract: | This graduation project identifies common issues found in ethics education in design programs and presents a practical solution. It carries out exploratory research into the application of a practical pedagogical approach in the environment of a dedicated educational space focused on ethics in design. The practical pedagogical approach in question is an interactive installation designed around the classical ethical dilemma of the panopticon, developed by Jeremy Bentham. The project used the methodology of the Creative Technology Design Process to develop a prototypical installation. This installation facilitates meaningful interaction through designed experience which embraces modernised themes, such as surveillance, presented in the panopticon and exposes individuals to the ethical issues surrounding privacy through confrontation. By doing this, the experience created by the installation aims to stimulate ethical consideration and ethically based dialogue or discussion among peers. Through varying research methods and evaluation of the installation, new insights were reached which support the continuation of research into both practical pedagogical approaches, dedicated educational spaces for ethics in design, and the benefits to be found in the combination thereof. |
