Abstract:Healthcare professionals today stay accredited to perform their job through completing mandatory education. This mandatory education has been implemented so that healthcare professionals are always up to date on the necessary skills and knowledge for their profession to ensure safe patient care. While healthcare professionals are usually intrinsically motivated to provide the best care to their patients, their learning motivation for obligatory materials is low due to high workload resulting in having little time available for learning. Additionally, many healthcare professionals feel that learning materials are too long and contain lots of information that is not relevant to their functions in specific healthcare branches. In collaboration with Noordhoff Professional, a creator of obligatory learning materials for healthcare professionals, one of their mandatory refresher courses was analyzed based on the ARCS-model for motivational design and principles for effective multimedia instruction. A prototype was created in which the refresher course was redesigned to consist of a visual theory component and a test component that included immediate feedback and a patient story to connect the questions.
