Abstract:In this thesis, various applications for integrating a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) in quantum transport measurements are explored. The main aim of this research is to show the benefits and potential of using an FPGA in data processing for quantum transport measurements. After giving an overview of the current status quo and systems which already have been developed, a system architecture is presented which uses a digitiser with built-in programmable logic to facilitate and improve quantum transport measurements. The presented implementations can be used to enable doing measurements at various sample rates and to make real-time charge diagrams, all configurable by the end user. The results of this thesis compare the performance of a system using the presented implementations to the currently used system which is based on a digital multimeter. It can be concluded that using an FPGA and digital signal processing on a hardware platform, in general, can greatly improve the measurement capabilities for quantum transport. Future developments in this field, mostly focused on digital signal processing elements can make it possible to eliminate certain analogue parts of the measurement systems and to make the measurement system overhead smaller, while resulting in better or comparable results.
