Abstract:Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) is a powder bed fusion process that can be used to produce polymer parts. To be able to automate and scale up SLS printing it is required to be able to identify the printed products. Identification is problematic when similar but unique products such as personalized medical products like insoles are produced in the same build. To identify the parts, embedded 2D matrix barcodes using self-shadows can be used. In this research guidelines to embed 2D matrix barcodes onto SLS printed products have been developed. Four parameters that influence the successful embedment of the codes have been identified: 1) The size of the code, 2) De carving depth, 3) The surface shape where the code is embedded and 4) Texture modifications of the surface. These parameters are varied over experiments, in which samples with varying values for each parameter are produced. To evaluate the samples, the generated contrast is quantified as the number of standard deviations between the group of positive (white) modules and negative (black) modules. Also, it is checked if the code can be read. It is concluded that for the successful embedment of a 2D matrix barcode, the module size should be at least 0.7 mm, if there is a lack of space the module size can be reduced to 0.6 mm. The minimal carving depth is 1.6 mm. Ideally, the maximum surface curvature is 20°, but up to 35° is permissible. Surface texture modification did not influence the results. A three-step process to embed the codes is developed to help apply these guidelines and embedding codes onto 3D SLS printed products.
