Abstract: | In an ideal situation for a company, all necessary cost information is present, allowing one to calculate the costs accurately. For sheet metal parts, this information comes from the process plan, cost estimate is generated by mainly considering geometrical aspects: all necessary data comes from the CAD file of the part or from a simple sketch. This research was conducted at a company called 247 TailorSteel B.V. located in Varsseveld (NL) and is active in the sheet metal industry as an innovative tech – company that supplies companies with the metal parts that they desire via an online portal called Sophia where the CAD – file or simple sketch is processed by Sophia. The goal here is to provide the customer with an online experience with a variety of options, like for example the material type and thickness, and give the quote calculation within a minute. Herein lies the challenge for the company. Because a miscalculation can cost the company a lot of money and mismanagement in production. Therefore this study researched the cost calculation technique that steel manufacturing companies like 247 TailorSteel B.V. can use for reducing the difference between the expected costs (in the quotation) and the actual production costs. |
