Abstract:While much research investigated the relationship between the menopausal transition and an increased risk for mental illness, less is known about menopausal women's mental well-being. This review provides an overview of current research on emotional, social and psychological well-being in menopausal women. The review was performed in line with the scoping review extension of the PRISMA guidelines. Selected studies had to be published between 2000 and 2022 and examine mental well-being in healthy women aged 40-60 during their natural menopausal transition. Fourteen relevant studies were found. However, none of these studies found a significant association between menopausal stage and mental well-being. Moreover, menopausal symptoms were mostly not associated with mental well-being if other factors, such as self-compassion, were also considered. Several studies indicated a relationship between psychological and lifestyle factors, such as menopausal beliefs, physical activity, or cognitive behavioural therapy and mental well-being in menopausal women. However, overall only a few studies on psychological and no study on social well-being during menopause have been found. Thus, scientific information on mental well-being throughout menopause is still limited.
