Abstract:Sustainability is becoming increasingly important for organisations worldwide. Company X also wants to improve its sustainability performance. There is a lack of progress in Scope 3 (indirect emissions), mainly caused by purchased products. This research provides an analysis of the current situation and possible actions. Recommendations are provided to help Company X reduce its emissions with suppliers. Thematic analysis is used to analyse data that is collected by conducting interviews with buyers and suppliers from Company X, and sustainable procurement experts. The results show that there is a lack of awareness and training among buyers. Furthermore, sustainability is not discussed with suppliers. This is partly caused by a lack of management commitment and encouragement of the buyers. Also, suppliers are willing to collaborate. Experts believe that this is the key to success. Demanding more certifications is not recommended, as certifications could be an unrealistic investment for many SMEs in the supply base. Supplier engagement is recommended, as it helps to collect data to improve the view on emissions and show the importance of sustainability to suppliers. Finally, it could improve the suppliers’ general performance. This is valuable, as suppliers should be considered as resources according to the resource-based view.
