Abstract: | This study examines how the media in the Netherlands have portrayed COVID-19 in the healthcare and event sectors through news frames, stakeholders, and tone of voice. Analyzing 400 newspaper articles published between January 2020 and February 2021, the study found that responsibility, conflict, and hope frames were common in healthcare, while human-interest, economic consequences, and responsibility frames prevailed in the event sector. The overall tone of voice was negative in both sectors. Key stakeholders differed, with external stakeholders prominent in healthcare and internal stakeholders in the event sector. The healthcare sector's frame usage correlated with COVID-19 mortality rates, while the event sector exhibited peaks during low mortality rates. The study emphasizes the media's role in informing the public but suggests a need to consider psychosocial factors alongside mortality rates and economic consequences. The media should provide a comprehensive perspective, and the public and policymakers must prioritize a broader agenda during crises. |
