Abstract:In this thesis, I explore the ethical risks regarding consumer application of AR glasses, which are expected to become a mainstream computing interface device in the upcoming decade. I start with a historical overview of the computing evolution to show how technological development is closely connected to private and economic interests, and that the current operating model of leading technology companies has been based on the attention economy and surveillance capitalist practices. Taking this context into consideration, I use the Anticipatory Technology Ethics (ATE) approach to map and evaluate the potential ethical risks involved posed by AR glasses designed for regular consumers. I conclude the thesis with some governance recommendations for policy-makers to prevent these risks to actually occur, and with an ethical-philosophical analysis reflecting on the desirability of using AR glasses as a daily accessory.
