Abstract:In modern education, there has been a shift towards a student-centered approach that emphasizes collaboration and teamwork. This change aims to empower students and promote deeper learning and critical thinking skills. However, communication problems can hinder group collaboration and negatively affect learning outcomes. Socially shared regulation (SSRL) is crucial in collaborative learning, but learners often struggle to effectively regulate the collaborative process. To address this, Miller et al. and Hadwin et al. developed two tools: the Individual Planning Tool (IPT) and the Shared Planning Tool (SPT). The IPT helps individual learners self-regulate their learning by setting goals and making plans, while the SPT allows learners to externalize their goals and plans. By integrating these tools, effective collaboration and self-regulated learning can be fostered, promoting the development of metacognitive and collaborative skills. However, this study assessing the use of these tools found a low prevalence of SSRL, contrary to expectations. The tools usage and SSRL were negatively correlated, indicating a lack of effectiveness. Additionally, there was no relationship found between self-regulated learning and SSRL. Further research is needed to identify the necessary skills for SSRL and to better facilitate it in collaborative learning environments.
