Abstract:CO2 emissions are increasing, and the climate is changing, thus expanding the need for research on pro-environmental behaviour (PEB). Environmental self-identity (ESI) and self-efficacy (SE) were identified as key antecedents of PEB. This study explored the effects of ease of retrieval (EoR) on ESI and SE, and the effects of ESI and SE on PEB. Additionally, this study examined perceived behavioural control (PBC) as a moderator of these relationships. During an online study 82 participants were randomly assigned to the conditions of the 2 (EoR: few versus many) x 2 (Behavioural Control: low versus high) design of the study. Additionally, manipulation checks and measures of ESI, SE, PEB and belief in climate change (BiCC) were included. Both manipulations were successful. However, the effect of EoR on both ESI and SE was not significant. Furthermore, BiCC did not correlate with any other variable. The main effects of ESI and SE on PEB were significant. No moderating effect of PBC was found. The findings are mostly not in line with previous research. Some of the lack of findings could be explained by limitations of the study (e.g. sample). Nonetheless, the findings that both ESI and SE influence PEB was expected.
