Abstract:Loneliness is prominent in individuals suffering from psychosis and has been associated with decreased well-being and quality of life. This study aimed to better understand the perspective of individuals with psychosis and how they experience loneliness in the course of their illness and during the recovery process. Three autobiographical books, written by individuals who suffered from psychosis and recovered, were analysed using narrative analysis. The analysis revealed that loneliness was present in all three cases, that there were positive effects of loneliness and solitude, that stigma was connected to loneliness, and that identity processes were important in the recovery process. The findings of this study challenge the notion that loneliness and social withdrawal are purely negative in the context of recovery from psychosis. Furthermore, this study showcases the value of narrative analysis and considering the research value of autobiographical accounts compared to more traditional qualitative data sources. Future research should further investigate the role of loneliness and solitude in the recovery from psychosis, as well as the meaning assigned to stigma and identity processes by afflicted individuals.
