Abstract: | This study looked at the effect of response formats (Likert and Visual Analog Scale) on affect dynamics in positive affect (PA) studies using the Experience Sampling Method (ESM). Participants (N=71) were randomly assigned to one of two conditions: Likert (N=35) or VAS (N=36), and they completed ten ESM questionnaires per day for seven days. The findings revealed no significant effects of response format on PA's emotional variability, instability, or inertia. As a result, in ESM studies, both Likert and VAS scales can be used without significantly influencing affect dynamics. These findings help to understand the impact of response formats in ESM for PA items. More research is needed, however, to investigate the impact of response formats on ESM measures and the potential significance of habituation in this context. |
