Abstract: | The prevalence of anxiety in students has been increasing, which suggests the need for interventions. According to dual process theories, cognitions such as one’s self-concept operate in explicit implicit ways. The present study aimed to investigate whether changing students’ implicit Positive Orientation (PO) self-concept through Cognitive Bias Modification (CBM), thus strengthening the association of themselves as a positive person, could lead to a decrease in state anxiety. An Implicit Association Test (IAT) was used to measure the self-concept PO bias, the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) was used to measure state anxiety, and CBM was conducted in the TIIM application. The participants (n = 50) were assigned to a control or experimental group. The experimental group followed CBM training for three days with two sessions a day, whereas the control group did not. Afterwards, both groups completed the IAT and STAI again. Results showed that the experimental group showed a significant increase in PO compared to the control group. However, anxiety scores did not decrease, and PO was not a mediator in the relationship between CBM and anxiety. Additionally, baseline anxiety was not a significant moderating variable. Nevertheless, this study provided and tested a novel CBM training focused on PO. |
