Abstract:Positive Orientation (PO) is a relatively new concept that is associated with beneficial effects on student’s mental and physical well-being. A positive self-concept or positivity bias towards oneself can be referred to as implicit PO. To change levels of implicit PO, cognitive bias modification is a common method targeting unconscious cognitive processes. This study aimed to test 1) for CBM training effects on implicit PO, 2) for CBM training effects on explicit optimism and 3) whether the effect of CBM training on explicit optimism is explained by implicit PO as a mediator. In a non-randomized controlled trial with pre-posttest-design, 50 students participated in a CBM training using a mobile app completing six sessions over three days. The results remained nonsignificant, however, simple testing revealed a positive interaction effect on implicit PO, as well as a significant increase in optimism scores within the intervention group. No mediation effects were found. These insights provide a first indication of the potential of CBM training increasing implicit PO and explicit optimism.
