Abstract:This research paper investigates the relationships between change of perspective (CoP), experience of police officers, trait empathy, and state empathy. Through a Virtual Reality experiment, 38 Dutch voluntary police officers immersed themselves on duty, whereafter half of the participants viewed a video with a change of perspective manipulation. Their level of trait empathy, years of experience, and state empathy towards a stereotyped group were measured in a questionnaire. This study did not find evidence for a main effect on CoP, years of experience, and trait empathy on state empathy. Also, there was no support for trait empathy to be a moderator on the relationship between CoP and state empathy. In additional analyses, several interesting findings were discovered. One example is the significant interaction effect between CoP, years of experience, and state empathy. Finally, the limitations of this study and future research ideas are mentioned.
