Abstract:The emergence of mobile internet technologies has greatly improved communication worldwide, but with this, the problem of online vigilance has arisen. This study aimed to investigate how online vigilance influences stress, sleep quality, and overall well-being. Furthermore, potential differences in online vigilance between young adults and middle-aged adults were explored. A cross-sectional study was conducted through an online questionnaire, in which participants’ scores on the OVS, PSS, PSQI, and MHC-SF were assessed. Moreover, items regarding digital and social media use were included. The data were analyzed using linear regression, Spearman’s rank correlation, and Wilcoxon’s Rank-Sum test. Outcomes showed a positive association between online vigilance and stress, and a negative relationship between online vigilance and overall well-being. No significant correlation was found between online vigilance and sleep quality. Additionally, stress and sleep quality were no moderators of the relationship between online vigilance and overall well-being. Furthermore, young adults scored significantly higher on online vigilance than middle-aged adults. Lastly, young adults spent more time per day using digital and social media than middle-aged adults. This study has expanded existing literature regarding the relationships between online vigilance, stress, sleep quality, and well-being, particularly by considering age differences. The findings can be utilized to further research and deepen the knowledge on these topics.
