Abstract:Nowadays, an increasing life expectancy has led to larger older populations, often requiring care. However, there is a shortage of caregivers, resulting in the implementation of ageing-in-place policies. To support older adults with ageing-in-place, eHealth technologies, such as unobtrusive monitoring systems (UMS) using artificial intelligence (AI), are being developed. This study aimed to explore the positive and negative beliefs of older adults regarding UMS using AI. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight participants ranging from age 70 to 89. Inclusion criteria were Dutch-speaking, ageing-in-place and older than sixty, while cognitive impaired older adults who lived in retirement homes were excluded. To analyse the interviews, a thematic analysis was used. Within the created themes, several codes were discovered based on sentences that conveyed the same meaning. The findings revealed that safety and care replacement were the most prominent benefits. Meanwhile, fear of human substitution was often mentioned as a disadvantage. The participants named familial support as a facilitator and reduction of human contact as a barrier. The results contribute to the understanding of beliefs of older adults regarding UMS. In the future, the system can be adapted using these beliefs and tested by the older adult to ensure adoption.
