Abstract:Victim-Offender Mediation is one of the most effective practices to restore justice after a crime. Online video chat poses a new form of VOM and could potentially be a suitable alternative to traditional face-to-face mediation. Due to its recent emergence, limited empirical investigations have been conducted on digital VOM forms. Due to some possible drawbacks of using new emerging technologies, there may be resistance to usage. This mixed-factor study examined the relationship between the attitude towards restorative justice and the willingness to participate in different VOM programmes. Thereby, the synchronicity of the medium was used as a possible factor that influence the likelihood of participation in VOM. The current study used statistical analyses and controlled for possible age and gender effects. Support for the supposition that attitude towards restorative justice influences the willingness to participate in VOM has not been found. Additionally, there was no significant difference between the willingness to participate in face-to-face and online video chat VOM. There were, however, significant differences between the willingness to participate in (a)synchronous forms, with higher willingness to participate in synchronous forms.
